Currently serving as the Deputy Director of the Department of Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Somaliland, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s energy landscape through his leadership in renewable energy projects, power distribution upgrades, and rural electrification initiatives. Notable contributions include his work on the Berbera 7MW solar project and extensive involvement in upgrading distribution lines to enhance energy access and reliability. Sharmaarke holds a Master’s degree in Electric and Electronics Engineering from Ege University / Izmir, Turkey, specializing in power systems, power distribution, and renewable energy. His expertise spans power system analysis, policy development, and project management, with a deep understanding of Somaliland’s energy sector laws and regulations. A respected figure in the energy community, he regularly advises government and private sector entities on the efficient and sustainable use of energy resources. He is passionate about improving energy access, affordability, and reliability, working closely with technical experts, consultants, and energy sector stakeholders to develop forward-thinking solutions for Somaliland’s energy challenges. In addition to his technical and policy expertise, Sharmaarke is a distinguished speaker, having been invited to prestigious industry events such as the Future Energy, Solar, and Storage Conference 2025. Fluent in English, Turkish, Somali (Mothertongue), and Arabic, he is known for his collaborative approach, visionary leadership, and commitment to advancing sustainable energy in Somaliland and beyond.
